While in grad school at UC Irvine Justin discovered masking and mask making. One of the most formative experiences was going to Korea and doing an exchange with the Korean National University of the Arts (KNUA) in Seoul Korea. The experiment was an ongoing exploration of the mash-up of UCI's Commedia and Clown training with Korean Pongsan Mask Dance Drama.  Working for two weeks with the guest artists, faculty and grad students at KNUA, the UCI and KNUA grads devised an adaptation of Aristophanes' The Birds.

Below are a few photos of the family of Grotesque Masks Justin made. They were built to bring masking into the curriculum he was teaching at the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, Culver City, CA and New York Film Academy's Los Angeles campus.
